Your First Guitar Chords

I believe that every guitar player should start with these five chords. E, A, D, C, and G. These are called open chords because they involve using open strings as part of the chord. Also known as Cowboy Chords.
Check out the diagram below: The numbers represent which fingers to use: 1 = index finger, 2 = middle, 3 = ring. Thanks for stopping by Heights Guitar Teacher.

Easy song for Beginner Guitarists

Here is an easy melody to play on guitar. "In the Hall of The Mountain King" composed by Edvard Grieg in 1875. It is a song that is instantly recognizable. I teach this song to many of my students who are in the first stages of playing the guitar.

Below is a PDF of the Guitar Tab that you can print out as well as an audio file of the melody.

Your First Scale - Minor Pentatonic Scale

Like many guitarists, the first scale that I learned was the Minor Pentatonic Scale. This scale is the basis for so many classic guitar riffs and melodies.
It is easy to play. Just two notes per string. You can move this scale to any place on the neck. Try it at the 5th fret, which puts you in the key of A minor.
